Cold Weather Can Kill your Battery

by admin

Seasons with extreme hot or cold temperatures can impact the life of your car battery. It's important to regularly have your battery checked and your vehicle maintained in preparation for the heat of summer and winter freezes. In wintertime when temperatures plummet, dead batteries are often the main reason for roadside assistance. Plan ahead to avoid being stranded out in the cold.

The life of a car battery is about 3-5 years, but it depends on the climate you live in, the use of electronic plug-in devices, and your driving habits (how often and how far). When temperatures are below freezing a car’s battery loses a significant amount of its strength. Considering the health of the battery along with the cold weather, the capacity (starting power) of the battery drops.

If your battery is more than three years old, there is a good chance you will need to replace it.  Also you need keep in mind the Carolinas faced some insane heat this past summer that took a toll on your battery and it's going to be weaker which may cause some strength issues when the cold hits.  Some battery-breakdown warning signs include: a grinding or a clicking sound when you turn on the ignition, slow cranking when you attempt to start your vehicle, or a dimming of headlights when idling.

There are a few things you can do yourself to maintain your battery. Make sure the battery terminals and cables are securely attached and free of corrosion, and unplug mobile phones and other electronic devices when not in use during the cold weather. If you don't drive your vehicle frequently and for decent distances, a trickle charger (keeps the life in your battery) is a good choice! When in doubt, have your battery tested by a qualified technician that can help determine if it will be strong enough in the dead of winter.
