Home on Wheels: How to Pack an RV

An RV may be a home away from home during a long road trip or when you are camping. But your RV will only truly feel like a home if you bring all the necessary items with you.

Make sure your RV is the perfect place for meals on wheels by bringing the cutlery, a bottle opener, a can opener and dishes. You’ll need pots and pans, mixing bowls and spoons to get your RV-cooked meal on the table and cleaning supplies such as paper towels, dish soap and sponges for after dinner. Don’t forget items to store leftovers such as Tupperware or Ziploc bags.

If you have access to a campfire, be sure to pack matches, and also the ingredients for s’mores: marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars. It’s also nice to have a cooler to keep near the fire rather than going in and out of the RV for drinks while around the campfire.

Be prepared for road trip emergencies with a properly packed tool box. You’ll want the basics: wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, a small knife, WD-40, duct tape and a tape measure. A membership to AAA will take away any worries if something happens on the road.

A first aid kit is also essential. Stock it with bandages, a thermometer, an ice pack and medications, such as Tylenol or Advil, antihistamine, eye drops, antacid, motion sickness medication and personal medication.

Because you are bringing your home with you, be sure to pack bedding, blankets and pillows. You’ll need toiletries and clothing and footwear appropriate for your trip. Sunscreen is always a must and you may want bug spray and citronella candles depending on your destination.

If your trip includes camping, be sure to bring a flashlight, water bottles, a compass and a whistle. You’ll also need outside entertainment, such as Frisbees, fishing gear and bats and balls, and cards, board games and reading materials while on the RV.

Before the age of the smartphone, RV essentials included maps and guidebooks. Find all you need to get where you are going with the AAA Mobile app and online TripTiks. But be sure to pack your cellphone and charger before you leave home.
