Slow Down, Move Over! Their Lives are on Your Shoulders!

by Gwen Newell

Every day across the Carolinas, emergency response workers, law enforcement officers and tow truck operators put themselves at risk to keep motorists safe. We owe it to them to slow down and move over to protect their lives, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but it’s also the law.

AAA tow operators respond to more than 30 million calls for help each year, many times working on roadside shoulders that are no wider than four feet. Due to these dangerous conditions, one tow truck driver is killed on the job at the roadside every other week. Hundreds more are injured while attending to disabled vehicles.

Both North and South Carolina’s “Move Over” law requires drivers to reduce speed and when possible vacate the lane closest to the official emergency vehicle on the roadside. While all 50 states have the law, we are still losing lives on the road because drivers haven’t made “slow down, move over” a habit.

All emergency responders deserve to make it home safely to their families. AAA urges drivers to stay alert and undistracted behind the wheel; watch for emergency vehicles at the side of the road; slow down and move over to give them space. Their lives are on your shoulders.
