Diamond Spotlight: The Cloister

Guest room at Cloister

A favorite retreat for families and outdoor lovers since 1928, The Cloister, in Sea Island, Georgia, is an upscale yet laid-back getaway on Sea Island. What sets it apart from many hotels is its secluded location in coastal Georgia, the exquisite Spanish-revival architecture and an extensive list of amenities. Its seclusion proved ideal for the 2004 G8 Summit — Sea Island is the only resort in the country to have hosted one.

The original hotel was intended to be temporary. However, it served generations of guests for 75 years. A 2006 rebuild brought new life into the property’s authentic details like the Spanish Lounge’s stained-glass windows, antique pecky cypress beams, stone casings and original marble mantle. The luxurious, 65,000-square-foot Spa at Sea Island Spa followed in 2007.

Accommodations here include guest rooms and suites. Sea Island provides a slew of activities for guests — fitness classes, a beach club, yacht club, shooting school, tennis center, boating, horseback riding, on-site bowling alley and pub, engaging children’s programs and three championship golf courses. With nine on-site dining options, there’s plenty for every palate.
