Who doesn’t love a sweet flaky pastry, a slice of fresh baked bread or a melt-in-your-mouth doughnut? Lucky for us, there are many delicious bakeries throughout the Carolinas. Here are nine of our favorites!
1. The Table Farm Bakery | Asheboro, NC
Enjoy chocolate croissants, cinnamon rolls, seasonal muffins or gluten free coffeecake with your morning cup of Joe. Don’t miss the pie case. The selection varies with the seasons, but favorites always include their signature chocolate pie and oatmeal cream pie cookie. Find them at 139 S. Church Street.
2. Bobby Boy Bakeshop | Winston-Salem, NC
This neighborhood bakery and coffee shop is owned by chefs Lucia and John Bobby. Hot buns, sweet rolls and intricate made-in-house pastries and desserts offer a sweet companion to locally roasted coffee. On the savory side, look for artisan breads crafted with locally milled flours and ancient grains. Find them at 1100 Reynolda Road, Suite 100.
3. La Farm Bakery | Cary, NC
French master baker and cookbook author Lionel Vatinet and his team delight visitors daily (as featured on the Sept-Oct 2020 issue of Go Magazine). Anticipate an assortment of French pastries and fresh baked boules, batards and baguettes, made with locally sourced North Carolina wheat. On the sweeter side: breakfast pastries, tarts and cakes. The white chocolate mini baguettes are legendary. Find them at 4248 NW Cary Parkway.
4. Your Mom’s Donuts | Matthews, NC
Light, fluffy squares of sweet yeast dough are crafted with no preservatives or artificial ingredients and are transformed into a host of flavors made with locally sourced ingredients. You’ll find classic treats, as well as a delicious seasonal selection that changes weekly – think pina colada and cantaloupe cucumber. The shop is open until the doughnuts are gone, so get there early! Find them at 11025 Monroe Road.
5. Swartzentruber’s Bakery | Abbeville, SC
Few do pound cake better than the family of Mennonite bakers at Swartzentruber’s Bakery. The recipe for this sweet and classic comfort food has been handed down from generation to generation for over 55 years. They bake nine different varieties of pound cake, but their signature sweet is a three-flavor pound cake layered with lemon, orange and vanilla. The bakery also makes cheese biscuits, pies and cookies. Find them at 139 Hwy 28 S.
6. Mama’s Sweet Shoppe | Due West, SC
The menu of artisan donuts is extensive — like chocolate sprankle maple bacon, white chocolate razz and margarita. In addition, you’ll find apple fritters, cinnamon buns and a number of savory menu items. Find them at 205 Main Street.
7. Sugar Island | Topsail Island, NC
At the coast, this bakery has everything you need to make your beachy vacay complete. Award winning pastry chef and owner Samantha Smith heads the team turning out baked goods galore. In season, fruit pies abound — as do signature cakes, fruity oat bars, cookies of all kinds and killer cinnamon rolls. Find them at 206 N. Topsail Drive.
8. Verdant Bakery | Charlotte, NC
New kids on the block, bread bakers Tanner Fink and Jaymin McAffrey are wowing customers with artisan fresh baked breads made with ancient grains and locally milled flour. You can live on bread alone and you’re going to revel in these ridiculously delicious loaves. Fresh baked every day, the bread is great for sandwiches, all sorts of toasts or simply slathered with butter for a rich, decadent midday treat. This food writer’s personal favorites include the seeded rye, the oat porridge bread and the Kalamata olive loaf… and oh, the English Muffins! Items are available direct from the bakery with an advance order, or on Saturday mornings at the Matthews Community Farmers Market and the Uptown Charlotte Farmers Market. Find them at 4410 Monroe Road.
9. Downtown Deli & Donuts | Spartanburg, SC
Gluten free, keto and vegan doughnuts are included in this bakery’s lineup of artisan options. Made in small batches, each flavor is crafted with GMO-free ingredients. Offerings change frequently but often include margarita and lemon thyme, hibiscus vanilla bean, fruit loops and blueberry basil. Arrive early — when they’re gone, they’re gone! Here’s a pro tip, though: Call ahead and they’ll hold your order! Savory options for breakfast and lunch are also on hand. Find them at: 147 E. Main Street Suite D.
